Navy veteran William Page is proof that employers are eager to hire veterans who attend the Lovell Federal Health Care Center job fairs. Employers participating in the regularly scheduled job fairs, which are co-sponsored by the FHCC Vocational Rehabilitation Unit and Naval Station Great Lakes Fleet and Family Support Center, are “very serious and eager to hire,” Page said. The Veteran and Military Job Fairs are held at Lovell FHCC in North Chicago every few months.

“Anybody who really wants a job can find a job through one of these job fairs,” said the former Navy boxer. Page last year attended a Lovell FHCC Veteran and Military Job Fair, where he made a positive first impression on the hiring managers from Always Faithful Equestrian Center. Page said he submitted his resume on the spot. A few days later, he visited the employer, interviewed and accepted the job offer.

Today, Page is a proud employee of AFEC in Mettawa, IL, where “satisfied employees genuinely care for the horses, club members and each other,” he said.

Lovell FHCC Compensated Work Therapy Coordinator Beverly Maier, job fair organizer, said, “The early bird goes to the job fair to find a job.”

The next job fair at the FHCC’s main hospital in North Chicago will be in May. Watch our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for the date. The fair is always 2-6 p.m. in Bourke Hall, Bldg. 4, 3001 Green Bay Road. Job fairs are open to veterans, members of the military transitioning out of the service, military retirees, Reservists, military spouses and Department of Defense employees. Job-seekers will be asked to show their government identification or discharge form to enter the job fair.

Page said he is very happy because AFEC is a veteran-friendly, supportive employer where the positive, caring culture creates a great work environment. The regularly occurring job fairs are coordinated by the Lovell FHCC Vocational Rehabilitation Service and the Naval Station Great Lakes Fleet and Family Support Center Transition Assistance Program. Since military values such as honor, courage and commitment are qualities all employers seek, it makes sense dozens of employers from throughout the region participate each time.

The approximately 40 employers who recruited at the February job fair included Illinois State Police, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Peterbilt Motors Company, Abbott Inc., Catholic Charities, Pactiv, Amazon Corporate, Goodwill Industries, Ruprecht a Division of Kilcoy Global Foods, Chicago Botanic Garden, Elite Care Management Inc., Job Center of Lake County, Walgreens, Western & Southern Financial, Crown Lift Trucks, Logistics Health Inc., Fox Valley Fire & Safety, Intertek, Federal Aviation Administration, United States Postal Service, Lake Forest Place, Ajilon, Advocate Aurora Health, Universal Technical Institute, Oshkosh Corporation, Argonne National Labs, Medline Industries Inc., Southern Illinois University, American Addiction Centers and First Student.

Maier gave one final piece of advice: “Bring plenty of resumes, and dress for success.” That's good advice for any job seeker.
