Situation Update

As of Thursday, March 26, 2020 1:14 PM CDT

COVID-19 coronavirus information:

FHCC is coordinating its response to COVID-19 coronavirus with VA/VHA, the Dept. of Defense, Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Patients who feel they may have been exposed and have symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) should call their provider for guidance before arriving at the FHCC. Staff members who feel they may have been exposed to the virus, and/or have symptoms, should contact Employee Occupational Health at 224-610-4215, prior to returning to work.

In an effort to protect our patients, staff, volunteers and visitors and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, starting March 30, occupants of every vehicle entering our North Chicago hospital campus will be screened at the gates, at which time screening inside building entrances will end. Please be patient and allow extra time for this process.

Gate hours are as follows:

Green Bay Road gate (staff are encouraged to use this gate): 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday 

Buckley Road/Lewis gate: Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

Ray Street gate: Open for deliveries only from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

FHCC will continue to restrict building access at the main hospital to four main entrances:

Bldg. 133CA - Blue Canopy (Patriot Store) entrance (weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends)
Bldg. 133EF - Ambulatory Care Clinic/Valet Parking entrance at four flagpoles, adjacent to parking garage
Bldg. 131 - Left-side front entrance (gym access)
ER, Bldg. 133 - For emergencies only (ER will remain open 24/7)

Parking Note: Except for those going to Bldg. 131 and the gym (then park in front of Bldg. 131), patients are strongly encouraged to park in the parking garage to avoid a long walk to an open entrance. Valet parking is available, like usual. The shuttle continues to operate. 

Community Living Center Visitor Restriction: Please note that for the immediate future, no visitors (except those visiting palliative care patients) are allowed in the Community Living Center, which includes the Green House homes. Staff members entering the CLC are screened for COVID-19 symptoms.

Restrictions on all visitors to the FHCC have been expanded. If you are not an on-duty employee, patient seeking emergency medical care, or patient attending a scheduled medical appointment, please do not come to our facilities. This is to protect everyone from the spread of COVID-19. Companions should only accompany patients into a building for reasons of medical necessity and/or safety. 

Community Based Outpatient Clinics: The same visitor restrictions apply. Screening for COVID-19 also will take place at the CBOCS. Please allow for extra time. 

Paul Kennedy Child Care Center:
Beginning March 30, each child will have his/her temperature taken upon arrival.

Pharmacy:
 To ensure social distancing, as of March 26, the main pharmacy at our North Chicago hospital windows will process new prescriptions only. Veteran patients should use mail-order services to get their refills. Department of Defense beneficiaries, too, are encouraged to use mail-order, or phone with pickup at Burkey Mall only. Please see below. 

Veteran patients are reminded of the following options:

  • Use MyHealtheVet to refill prescriptions. Go to: myhealth.va.gov. You must be registered for MyHealtheVet to use this service. For questions about Secure Messaging using MyHealtheVet, call 224-610-8281 to speak to the FHCC MyHealtheVet representative.,
  • Call 224-610-3897 or 800-393-0865 (Option 5, and then Option 1). Refills and renewals of your prescriptions will be mailed to your home.

 
Department of Defense beneficiaries, you have the following options:

  • Refill prescriptions online through the TRICARE Patient Portal at tricareonline.com.
  • Call Audiocare at 847-688-2757 or 800-552-8569 and provide prescription refill number and the last four digits of sponsor’s social security number (SSN). After three working days, DoD prescriptions will be ready for pick-up at Burkey Mall Pharmacy. As an alternative, DoD beneficiaries can get mail delivery for refills through TRICARE mail order and TRICARE Retail Pharmacy Program, both administered by Express Scripts, 877-363-1303.

Social Distancing: Waiting areas are being reconfigured to allow patients to distance themselves from others while they wait. Additionally, please note seating is no longer available in the coffee shop or canteen/cafeteria. Food and beverages may still be purchased "to go."

FHCC remains open with normal operating hours

Despite the above controls put in place to control the spread of COVID-19, Lovell FHCC's main hospital and community based outpatient clinics are open and following normal operating hours. At any time, Lovell FHCC's Naval Station Great Lakes branch clinics may be operating with heightened security. Please call ahead if you have any questions.

Appointments: Patients who choose to reschedule and/or cancel appointments should contact their doctor's office/clinic, or call Central Scheduling (see "inclement weather" below). Elective surgeries are being rescheduled, and some other specific surgeries as well. Those patients will be contacted to reschedule. Patients will be offered the opportunity to conduct appointments virtually or via telehealth services. Ask your provider about VA Video Connect.

The Lovell FHCC emergency department, acute medicine, acute psychiatry and critical care unit remain available 24/7.  The surgery department also is closed during federal holidays but is available for emergencies.
