Veterans Creative Arts Festival 2011
January 19, 2011
From songwriters to poets and quilters, military Veterans from the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin areas are preparing their creative talents for the 4th Annual Veterans Creative Arts Festival at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center Feb. 23.
“The talent we see each year at the competition is unsurpassed,” said Wayne Bolden, Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center recreation assistant. “While the local competition is the first step towards national recognition, we find that our local participants are often focused on sharing their multitude of talents with others at the facility -- not to mention the bragging rights that come with winning locally.”
Bolden noted the competition includes 53 categories in the visual arts division, ranging from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits. Additionally, there are 120 categories in the performing arts; these areas include all aspects of music, dance, drama and creative writing.
“Last year, we had four local Veterans represent the facility at the national competition in Wisconsin,” said Bolden. “After winning at a local level, Veterans are presented to a nationally committee to compete. This year, we’re hoping to get an even larger selection of talent from throughout the region.”
There is no fee for the program, but interested Veterans must register prior to the Feb. 17 deadline. They can do this by calling 224-610-3138 (3184 or 3145). More information about the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival can be found at www.va.gov/opa/speceven/caf.
